This fat, experimental alphabet was done in Illustrator using my Wacom tablet. I created a calligraphic brush with these settings: Angle 30º, Roundness 50% and Diameter 300pt with Pressure Variation set to 300 pt. I wanted to see what a brush with a huge range of pressure sensitivity would do. Here you can see the skeleton strokes that created the letterforms.
The overall shape it took was unintentional at first as I abandoned all attempts at maintaining consistency and began to grow the letters line by line. I just decided to go with it after the first few lines.

This is great stuff! I’ll have to get me one of those tablets, too … ;·)
This would make a lovely poster.
I think the larger letters more successfully show the variation in weight. I think the piece is beautiful — good work!
fun look Josh you sure got alot out of that wacom tablet, it feels pretty fluid & has a great 60’s influence (don’t know if that was intentional or not-doesn’t really matter) way to go!
Thanks for the nice comments Florian, Eric, Ana and Virgina!
I’ve put down the wacom for a little bit in favor of pen on paper. But maybe I should do a series of posters in this style…
On a side note, I can’t help but see a stack of those mini pastel colored marshmallows when I look at this now.
Josh,
I stumbled upon your incredible site yesterday while surfing for info on how to create my own fonts. I read that you can create a font in windows font editor, which I did but no luck saving then as a ttl. I tried downloading cygwin to eventually install font forge but that hasn’t work either. I have a wacom tablet and would love to just draw my own font. Any tips? I tried my own version of the alaphabet last night and fun with it. I collect the wooden type-face from the days of old. I love your work. Picasojo
